MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin will have surgery after sustaining a fracture to his hand and foot following a crash during pre-season testing in Sepang, Malaysia, on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
Martin landed heavily on the tarmac, having been launched into the air after losing control of his bike on turn two. He landed face-first, causing his helmet to shatter on the Sepang track.
The 27-year-old, who recently switched to Aprilia from Pramac Racing after winning the 2024 MotoGP Championship, was taken to the medical center by an ambulance before being moved to the hospital.
“Jorge Martin has been diagnosed with a right hand fracture and fractures in his left foot,” a statement from MotoGP read. “He has undergone a CT scan and MRI, both of which were negative for any injuries.
“He will stay in hospital overnight and tomorrow he will fly back to Europe to undergo surgery on both his right hand and left foot.”
The Spaniard clinched his first MotoGP title in 2024 in the final race of the season, denying Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia a third straight championship.
The 2025 MotoGP season kicks off in Thailand next month, with qualifying and the sprint race on 1 March, while the main race will take place the following day.
Martin will now be racing against time as he has only three weeks to recover and be healthy enough for the first grand prix of the season at Thailand’s Chang International Circuit in Buriram.
