Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Herve Renard has confirmed turning down an opportunity to coach the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Afrosport reports.
Renard, 56, was famously linked with the Super Eagles vacant job when Finidi George left his position after just two competitive games in charge.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) eventually settled for German Coach Bruno Labbadia, but contractual irregularities stalled the appointment, leading to Augustine Eguavoen taking charge of the team on an interim capacity.
Renard, who won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015, recently made it known that he was only a few details away from taking charge of the three-time African Champions.
“I almost went to Nigeria. I thought about it for a few days, even weeks, before deciding to say no,” Renard said in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe.
“It was the best offer I have had so far, but the other details didn’t suit me.”
Renard recently left his role as head coach of the French women’s football team, having previously coached Morocco’s Atlas Lions and Saudi Arabia in the past few years.
