F1: Plans for post-season rookie race delayed until 2025

Formula 1 has delayed plans to have a race for aspiring drivers called ‘rookie race’ until at least 2025, Afrosport reports.

The event was to be a sprint-race at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi which would give young drivers a better opportunity to showcase their abilities to race in F1.

However, a meeting of the F1 Commission on Wednesday concluded that more time was needed to ensure the event worked effectively.

“While the concept received widespread support, it was determined that, due to timing and organisational constraints, the event would not take place in 2024, and discussions would continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025,” read an FIA statement per BBC Sport.

Some of the concerns that brought about the postponement of the rookie race was the strain it would put on paddock crew after going through the longest season in F1 history.

Cost implications on freight and other logistics and also how the event would be televised and appealing to audiences was considered.

There does not seem to be any guarantee that the event will hold in 2025 but the F1 group has the intention to make it happen.
