Ivan Toney has revealed the motive behind his penalty technique in England’s shootout victory over Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.
The Brentford forward came on for Harry Kane in extra time and converted England’s penultimate spot kick with consummate ease which caught the attention of fans who watched him.
Responding to the technique, Toney said: “My special technique is just thinking of the celebration after I put it in the back of the net.”
He added: “Everyone’s got to have the courage to step up and take a penalty. And ‘Picks’ [Jordan Pickford] set us off to a great start by saving.
“‘Coley’ [Cole Palmer] does what he does, puts it in the back of the net as well. And then we got going from there. And, I think all the penalties were, top class.”
“Yes, there’s loads of confidence, throughout the squad. Like you see, the last game… the last minute equaliser, then ‘H’ [Harry Kane] with the winner. And then this game, ‘Saks’ [Bukayo Saka] getting us back into the game. And, we go right to the end.
“Penalties took us through and, just the character throughout. And I think we take that momentum going into the next games and we’ll put ourselves in a strong position.”
