WTT Contender Lagos: Organisers confident of building on previous success

Organisers of the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos have assured that measures have been put in place to ensure that this year’s edition surpasses what was witnessed previously.

The chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the event, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, gave the assurance at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

Oshodi, who is also the Vice President of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), made it known that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos, becomes a focal point in the annals of sporting events in Nigeria and globally.

“This year we are looking at around 80 players, and that’s due to the Olympics, because we had more last year, a lot of players are in training camps for the Olympics, so in a way, I think we are lucky to have this numbers,” he said.

“We are looking forward to seeing the exciting Chinese players, their National Junior champion, like we say, the National Junior champion in China is a champion in 200 countries in the world.

“The defending champion is back, Shin Yubin from Korea, a lot of players from Europe, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, crowd favorite here in Lagos, hoping to go one better than last year, so we are quite happy with the numbers we have.”

Oshodi also expressed delight with the opportunity the WTT Contender Lagos will give to young Nigerian players.

The competition serves off on Wednesday and will run through Sunday at Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The total prize money for the event is $80,000 and 400 ranking points are also on the menu for participants.
