World Athletics Championships 2023: Uganda’s Kiplimo withdraws from Budapest trip

World record holder Jacob Kiplimo has withdrawn from Uganda team for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The Uganda Athletics Federation confirmed that Kiplimo suffered an acute injury to his right hamstring and he is yet to fully recover.

The 22-year-old was expected to participate in the men’s 5000m and 10,000m events but he will not be able to train optimally for the next one to two months.

A part of the statment from the Uganda Athletics body read: “Uganda Team Doctor Martin Chebet ruled him out of the championship after two weeks of medical consultation and management of the injury.

“The federation is however disheartened by the withdrawal of Uganda’s medal hopeful at the World Championships but urged the rest of Team Uganda to remain focused.”

Kiplimo won bronze in the 10000m event at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon after he claimed gold medals in 5000m and 10000m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

He set the half-marathon in November 2021 after running a time of 57 minutes and 31 seconds. Earlier this year, he won gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Australia.
