Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2022-23 Premier League: Best player, best result & top scorer

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2022-23 Premier League: Best player, best result & top scorer

Wolverhampton Wanderers endured an inconsistent season with a host of poor performances from many of their big players.

They dropped off in points (41), games won (11), and position (13) compared to the 2021–22 season, where they finished 10th with 15 games won and amassed 51 points.

Their disappointing season was capped off by the sacking of Portuguese manager Bruno Lage after a run of poor results that left them in 18th position on the table with just three goals scored—the lowest in the league at that point.

Best Player: Craig Dawson

In a season that was filled with ups and downs, the English defender was one of the stand out stars for Wolves.

Despite joining on loan from West Ham United in the winter window, Dawson settled quickly into the side, helping them keep six clean sheets in his 17 Premier League appearances, something they found difficult to achieve before his arrival.

The 33-year-old also found the back of the net on his appearance for Wolves in a 3-0 win over Liverpool at the Molineux Stadium.

Flop Signing: Goncalo Guedes

Guedes joined Wolves in a £27.5 million deal last summer, with many believing the talented Portuguese winger would light up the Premier League.

However, the former Valencia man found life in the English top division tough as he managed only 13 appearances, scoring just once and providing one assist with just two wins and seven losses.

The 26-year-old was later loaned out to Benfica in the January transfer window.

Best Game: Wolves 3 vs Liverpool 0

In a season of many terrible results, Wolves’ best result was a completely dominant 3-0 home win over Liverpool.

An own goal from Joel Matip and two beautiful strikes from Dawson and Ruben Neves helped them get revenge over the Reds, who had knocked them out of the FA Cup over a fortnight before.

Worst Result: Brighton 6 vs Wolves 0

Of the many abysmal performances they had in the 2022–23 season, their 6-0 loss to Brighton at the Falmer Stadium was the peak of them all.

The defeat came at a point in time when they had decent form, and Roberto de Zerbi’s side snatched their confidence with the win thanks to braces from Deniz Undav, Pascal Gross, and Danny Welbeck.

Top Scorer: Daniel Podence and Ruben Neves

The Portuguese duo of Podence and Neves ended the season as the Wanderers’ top scorers with six goals each.

Former Olympiacos forward Podence scored half a dozen goals in 32 appearances, while club captain Ruben Neves scored his in 35 games.
