2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Rohr’s Benin move above Super Eagles, Guinea upset Algeria

Benin temporarily moved ahead of the Super Eagles of Nigeria after defeated Rwanda 1-0 in their Group C 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Abidjan on Thursday.

Douko Dodo scored the only goal of the game to move the Cheetahs, lead by former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr, on four points, joint top with the Rwandans.

The Super Eagles will have the opportunity to jump ahead of Benin when they take on South Africa in Uyo.

Meanwhile, Algeria suffered an upset as they lost 2-1 at home to Guinea. Morlaye Sylla put the Syli National in front in the 50th minute before Yasser Balde’s own goal levelled matters two minutes later.

Aguibou Camara’s 63rd minute effort was however able to give the Guineans all three points and move them joint top on six points with Gabon and Ghana who defeated Mali 2-1 in Bamako.

In other results, Egypt defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 to maintain their 100% record in Group A while it was goalless between Guinea-Bissau and Ethiopia.

In Group B, DR Congo and Senegal played out a 1-1 draw, with Sudan going on top after beating Mauritania 2-0 away from home.


In Group D, 10-man Libya went on top after defeating Mauritius 2-1 while in Group H, Malawi thumped Sao Tome and Principe 6-0.
