World Athletics Championships: Host city Budapest gear up for opening event

On Wednesday, the host city of the upcoming World Athletics Championship, Budapest, continued final preparations for the biggest athletics event of the summer.

The brand-new National Athletics Center in the nation’s capital, gears up to host the 19th edition of the Championships in a few days.

The centre, which is built on the eastern bank of the Danube River, will have a capacity of 35,000 for the event before being reduced to 15,000 when the Championships are over.

The World Athletics Championship, tagged “Budapest 2023”, will witness some of the best athletes in the world battle for the title of “World Champion”

American track star and 400m hurdles world champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will not be participating in the Championships. Likewise, world record holder for the half marathon Jacob Kiplimo is also ruled out of the event.

The World Athletics Championships kicks off this Friday, August 19, and finishes on Sunday, August 27, with the first event of the Championships being the 20-kilometer walk.
