Nigeria are chasing their first win at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 when they face Australia in a Group B match on Thursday.

The Super Falcons need to avoid defeat in Brisbane against the co-host country to boost their chances of advancing into the knockout stage after Canada defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-0 on Tuesday.

Nigeria’s first match in the competition ended in a goalless draw against Canada last Friday while Australia edged the Republic of Ireland 1-0 and they are currently second in the group.

The match between the Matildas and the 11-time African champions will take place on Thursday, July 27 by 11 am (Nigerian Time) at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Australia and Nigeria have only faced each other once in the international women’s football stage and it was at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. Australia came out victorious in the group game that ended 2-0, courtesy of Kyah Simon’s double in Winnipeg.

Australia’s best result at the FIFA Women’s World Cup has been reaching the quarter-final in 2007, 2011 and 2015 while the Super Falcons are also yet to go beyond the last-eight stage since 1999.
