Women’s World Cup: Thousands of fans join countdown festival in Australia

Over 4,000 fans gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia to mark 25 days to the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Saturday’s festival was a celebration of unity and the diversity of the tournament that will see 32 countries compete for glory in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

In attendance at the event were former Australia star, Amy Duggan, FIFA legend Joy Fawcett, representatives of host countries associations – Football Australia and New Zealand Football as well as FIFA officials.

The 2023 Women’s World Cup is tagged “Beyond Greatness” and flags of the 32 participating countries were included in a 17-metre tall Unity jersey.

Meanwhile, FIFA Council Member, Johanna Wood was impressed by the atmosphere at the iconic Sydney Harbour and he stressed the unifying role of football in the world.

Wood said: “What a fabulous morning of football, culture and community coming together. We are committed to delivering an exceptional tournament and experience that will not only captivate the hearts and minds of football fans but also empower women in sport across the globe. We are ready to go Beyond Greatness and football, once again, has demonstrated how it unites the world.”

June 25 also coincides with the day Australia and New Zealand won the rights to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup in 2020.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is set to be  record-breaking event in women’s football with 32 participating teams and over a million tickets sold.

Four countries will represent Africa in the month-long competition – South Africa, Morocco, Zambia and Nigeria.
