Women’s World Cup: Super Falcons coach Waldrum backs South Africa to host 2027 edition

Super Falcons manager Randy Waldrum has backed South Africa to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The country is in competition with Brazil for a solo bid while the United States and Mexico as well as the trio of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are going for joint bids.

Representatives of all bidding countries recently flew to Sydney to have talks with global governing body FIFA on matters relating to the bids. Waldrum sees South Africa hosting the Women’s World Cup as an opportunity to transform football on the African continent.

“Yeah, I hope they get it. I think it would be a great opportunity to showcase that,” Waldrum said after the Super Falcons’ round of 16 defeat to England on Monday.

“And it would do wonders for football in Africa, right? For all the nations, all the young players playing there to be able to come and see an environment like this. What we have seen here in Australia would be massive for all the young women out there aspiring to, you know, to play for the teams.

“So I hope I hope it happens. And, you know, I think it would I think it would help transform, you know, football there.”

This will be the second time South Africa bid to host a World Cup having won the bid to host the men’s World Cup in 2010.

The 2023 Women’s World Cup has seen three African countries in South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco reach the knockout stage. The former two have been eliminated and the Atlas Lionesses will battle it out with France in Adelaide on Tuesday.
