Women’s Champions League: Malawi’s Chawinga influential as PSG end Man United’s European journey

Malawi sensation Tabita Chawinga provided an assist as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Manchester United 3-1 and 4-2 on aggregate at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.

Both sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg but it was PSG that got into the ascendancy in the return leg as Lieke Mertens opened the scoring in the 17th minute when she scored a rebound off Chawinga’s powerful shot that was initially saved by United goalkeeper Mary Earps.

United levelled courtesy of Lisa Naalsund just two minutes after the break but it did not take too long for PSG to respond as Chawinga found Mertens down the left flank to allow the Dutch forward complete her brace before Sandy Baltimore added the third and final goal that ensured Joselyn Precheur’s ladies participation in the Champions League group stage.

In other results, Kenya’s Wafula Nekesa scored the first of six goals that earned Slavia Prague a 6-0 victory and 11-0 aggregate win over Olimpia Cluj while Nigeria’s Christy Ucheibe came off the bench to score the final goal in Benfica’s 4-0 win over Apollon and 11-0 on aggregate. Canadian-Beninese Marie-Yasmine Alidou also came off the bench to score the third goal after redeeming herself from a penalty miss moments after her introduction on the pitch.

Colombian teenage sensation Linda Caicedo also provided an assist as Real Madrid defeated Valerenga 3-0 and 5-1 on aggregate to make into the group stage.

The Women’s Champions League group stage will commence on November 14.
