Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera out for remainder of season with knee injury

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Yerson Mosquera is the latest player set for a spell on the injury bed as the 23-year-old will now miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

The Colombian was stretched off in the 82nd minute during Wolves’ 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

The Wolves defender was caught by a tackle from Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, which caused him to twist his knee, before subsequently being replaced b/y Uruguayan defender Santiago Bueno.

Mosquera underwent scans to ascertain the extent of the injury and according to a statement from Wolves, the defender has suffered injuries to his medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and he will now require an operation.

Wolves’ head of high performance Phil Hayward said in a statement on the club’s website on Tuesday: “Yerson [Mosquera] has now had all of the various assessments and scans which unfortunately confirm injuries to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

“We will be visiting specialists in the coming days to finalise the plan for surgery; this will take place in the next two weeks.

“Clearly there is a long recovery period ahead for Yerson, and the club will be providing all the support he needs to ensure a successful rehabilitation and a return to competition in due course.

“Timescales are difficult to state prior to surgery but it is highly unlikely he will feature again this season.”

Mosquera joined Wolves in 2021 and he spent the last two seasons on loan at Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati and La Liga side Villarreal.

He has started all five of Wolves’ Premier League games this season as they remain without a win and sit bottom of the standings with one point. They will head to Anfield this Saturday to take on Liverpool.
