WNBA: Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson breaks single-season scoring record

Two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), A’ja Wilson, has shattered the league’s single-season scoring record in the Las Vegas Aces’ 86-75 win over the Indiana Fever at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in the early hours of Thursday.

The 28-year-old, who entered the game needing just 11 points to make history, broke the record with her 941st point of the season, just before the halftime break.

She achieved this feat on a jumper from the free throw line with 26.4 seconds left on the clock in the second quarter, surpassing the previous mark of 939 points set by Seattle Storm’s guard Jewell Loyd after 38 games in 2023.

Wilson returned to the Aces’ team after missing their previous game against the New York Liberty on Sunday, as she was seen wearing a cast to recover from a foot injury she suffered against the Connecticut Sun two days prior.

The two-time WNBA champion scored the Aces’ first eight points, hitting four consecutive buckets to help the regain the lead after the Fever leapt to an early 7-0 lead. She scored a pair of free throws to tie the record before surpassing it in the second quarter with a jumper as she finished the first half with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Wilson, in her 34th game of the season, finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 11-of-28 from the field.

Tipped to win her third MVP title at the end of the season, Wilson entered the game in Indiana averaging career highs with 27.3 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game while shooting 52.7% from the field.

The Aces have four games left before the curtain closes on the regular season, with the first of the lot being another visit to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse to face the Fever on Friday night.
