Van Dijk confirms progress being made over new Liverpool contract

Saka reveals how injury layoff helped him mentally

Virgil van Dijk says there is progress with Liverpool over signing a new contract that will tiethim down at Anfield, Afrosport reports.

The 33-year-old Dutch defender is out of contract at the end of the season and had previously stated he was unsure if he would remain in the red half of Merseyside.

Captain Van Dijk is one of three top Liverpool players whose contracts will be up in the summer, the others being Egypt winger Mohamed Salah and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“There is progress, yeah,” he said after Liverpool’s defeat at Fulham on Sunday.

“I don’t know [if I’ll stay], we’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.

“But I want them to be there on Sunday again [at home to West Ham United] and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”

Van Dijk joined Liverpool in a £75m deal from Southampton in 2018 and has played 323 in all competitions, scoring 26 goals and winning eight titles including the Premier League and Champions League.
