UEFA President Ceferin aims dig at European Super League supporters

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has described parties pushing for the creation of the European Super League as “wolves”.

The competition, which involves some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs, is seen as a threat to other competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and the Premier League and has been met with heavy criticism from UEFA, FIFA, local league bodies and club fans as well.

In spite of the backlash, A22 Sports Management, the company exploring all possible avenues to create the Super League, are still keen to make the competition happen, recently releasing a proposal that will see the competition involve 60 to 80 teams in a multi-divisional format, a departure from the original plan of 12 teams.

“Those who promote this project are now claiming that they want to save football. In the space of a few months, the Super League has turned into a character in Little Red Riding Hood: a wolf disguised as a grandmother, ready to eat you up,” Ceferin said at the UEFA Congress in Lisbon.

“But nobody’s fooled. Because here we have two opposing world views.

“We have cynicism over morality. We have selfishness over solidarity. We have greed over benevolence. Self-absorption over openness to others. Self-interest over altruism. Shameful lies over the truth. Heirs over builders. Cartel over meritocracy and democracy. Stock prices over sporting merit. The quest for profit over the quest for trophies.”

Last December, UEFA and FIFA received the backing of the European Court of Justice in their bid to block the creation of the European Super League but a verdict is yet to be passed as A22 Sports Management also tries to challenge the move in court.
