UEFA Champions League final: What to know about headline performer Burna Boy

Grammy Award winner Burna Boy is the headline performer for the 2023 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan in Istanbul on Saturday.

The Nigerian music superstar will thrill over 75,000 fans inside the Ataturk Olympic Stadium to his melodious tunes, just a week after he staged a sold-out concert in West Ham United’s London Stadium.

Burna Boy will not be alone on the Pepsi stage in Istanbul as Swedish DJ, Alesso will get the party started before his magical performance.

What club does Burna Boy support?

Burna Boy is a football enthusiast and he has not hidden his admiration for Premier League club, Manchester United with occasional visits to Old Trafford.

Former Man Utd players Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard were previously spotted in one of Burna Boy’s performances in the UK during the Parklife Festival in 2021.


How many sporting events has Burna Boy headlined?

The 31-year-old performed at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game half-time show in February. He was among the trio of Nigeria music stars [Rema and Tems] who came on stage in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Although he has performed in many stadiums, the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League final will be his second major sporting event.


Does Burna Boy play any sport?

The ‘Ye’ crooner has revealed his love for sports in several interviews, hinting he could have played either football or basketball at the professional level if he did not follow his music dreams.

In a recent interview with Julie Adenuga; Burna Boy said: “I love football. I was good at playing football but the wickedest thing was that I was good at goalkeeping. That’s why I just stopped because [goalkeeping] was dead. “I didn’t feel so important. I just didn’t feel like I was needed like that. I felt like without me the team will still be alright. I don’t want to spend my life like that.”

Earlier this year during his trip for the NBA All-Star Game, the Nigerian superstar disclosed his love for the NBA and basketball in general.

He said: “I’ve got too many. I wanted to play basketball at first, I was in high school on the basketball team and we used to kill everyone. “It has always been a dream of mine to play basketball. Obviously, the roads of life turn different and here still at the NBA. Still made it to the NBA.”
