Nigeria’s under-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, were held to a 1-1 draw by Mexico in a pre-tournament friendly match on Monday night as part of their preparation for this month’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
The Flamingos, who arrived at their base in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic’s capital city last week, got ahead in the 33rd minute through midfielder Faridat Abdulkareem.
However, the young Nigerians were unable to hold on to their lead as they conceded the equaliser in the 42nd minute.

The game ended in a stalemate but it was good showing for the Bankole Olowookere-led Flamingos, who are looking to surpass their third place finish at the last edition of the tournament in India in 2022.
Nigeria are in Group A of the 16-team competition alongside hosts Dominican Republic, Ecuador and New Zealand.
The Flamingos will commence their participation in the U17 Women’s World Cup against New Zealand in their opening match on October 16, before taking on Ecuador three days later. They will play their last group game against Dominican Republic in the early hours of October 23.
