Tottenham players to refund fans after Newcastle humiliation

Tottenham Hotspur players have announced their intention to reimburse fans who travelled to St. James’ Park for their match against Newcastle United over the weekend with the cost of their match ticket.

Spurs were thrashed 6-1 on Sunday, with five of the goals coming inside the first 21 minutes of play, leading to the sacking of interim manager Cristian Stellini, leaving his assistant and former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason in charge until the end of the season.

Prior to his sacking on Monday, April 24, Stellini and club captain Hugo Lori apologised to the Spurs faithful for their abysmal display on Tyneside, causing them to fall further in the race for a top-four spot.

However, on Tuesday, the first-team squad of the 2019 Champions League finalists offered a full refund for the away fans with a message on their official website.

It reads: “We understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

Club chairman Daniel Levy also took responsibility for the embarrassing result, terming it “unacceptable”.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable,” Levy said. “It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.”

Tottenham’s loss at Newcastle was their second straight in the Premier League following last week’s pulsating 3-2 home defeat to relegation-battling Bournemouth.

The Lilywhites, who have just one win in their last five league matches, will hope to put their recent woes behind them when they welcome Manchester United to North London on Thursday in a battle for a top-four spot. They will then visit the electrifying Anfield on Sunday to take on Jurgen Kloop and his Liverpool side.
