Taraba State emerged champions of the 2025 Wheelchair Basketball National Open Championship in Abeokuta on Sunday with a spirited performance in the male and female finals, Afrosport reports.
The Northern state edged Delta State 5-3 in the female final at the newly-refurbished Basketball court at Alake Sports centre.
They would also go on to win the male category with a 12-6 victory over of Oyo State.
The only blemish of Taraba was the 4-3 defeat to Lagos State in the final of the mixed doubles event.
Meanwhile, President of Paralympic committe of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, who was at the grand finale, lauded the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation (NWBF) for hosting a befitting national championship.
The PCN Boss expressed optimism that the players on parade have what it takes to form an integral part of the Nigerian national wheelchair basketball team.
On the part of the NWBF President, Seyi Johnson, the federation will continue to do all it takes to put the athletes first in all.
He also assured that more events will come up to keep the players together, particularly ahead of an invitational tournament in Morocco in June.
He said: “We have recorded huge success here and we hope to build on this momentum. Events will be coming in thick and fast, up next is the National Sports Festival, and then our trip to Morocco in June.
“The festival will be more competitive and it will put the players in good shape for the Agadir invitational. I am really excited about the growth, i know it will get when better.”
Johnson stressed that his ultimate aim is for Nigeria’s wheelchair basketball team to be at tthe next Commonwealth Games.
