Six Africans gain Premier League promotion with Luton Town

Nigeria trio Elijah Adebayo, Fred Onyedinma and Gabriel Osho, Democratic Republic of Congo’s Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Zimbabwe duo Marvelous Nakamba and Admiral Muskwe will play in the Premier League next season with Luton Town.

Five of the African stars except injured Muskwe were in action at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening as Luton Town defeated Coventry City 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra-time.

Adebayo provided the assist for Jordan Clark to break the deadlock in Saturday’s Championship playoffs final but Coventry City fought back with an equaliser just after the hour mark.

Onyedinma started off on the bench and he was introduced in the 84th while the trio of Adebayo, Mpanzu and Osho were replaced in extra time. Combative midfielder Nakamba was the only African star who played the entire duration and he scored his penalty in the shoot-out.

It was a thrilling shoot-out that headed into sudden death, but Coventry City’s Fankaty Dabo of Sierra Leonean descent misfired his attempt wide off target to seal a historic promotion for Luton Town.

The Hatters are back in the English top-flight for the first time since their relegation in the 1991-92 season.
