Sheffield Wednesday appoint Henrik Pedersen as new manager

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Henrik Pedersen as new manager, with the Dane stepping in following the departure of Danny Rohl earlier this week, Afrosport reports.

The 47-year-old, who joined the coaching staff in October 2023 as Rohl’s assistant, had recently extended his contract amid growing uncertainty over the club’s managerial future.

Pedersen assumes the role at a turbulent time for the Owls, who have had several first-team players exit in the past two weeks. The club also faces logistical issues with the North Stand at Hillsborough shut down by the local council over structural safety concerns.

Wednesday are also experiencing financial instability, with wage payments reportedly delayed in May and June. A registration embargo has also been placed on the club, and despite chairman Dejphon Chansiri’s public declaration of intent to sell the club, no concrete progress has been made on that front.

As of the end of July, wages for the current month were still outstanding, with speculation of growing unrest within the squad.

Henderson has his work cut out for him, as the Owls finished 12th in Championship last season and won just one of their final nine matches. He, however, has managerial experience, having previously coached in Denmark, Germany and Norway.

“I am incredibly, incredibly proud to become manager of this wonderful football club,” Pedersen told the club website. “Since arriving in Sheffield with my family, the city immediately felt like our home. The people are what makes a city special, and the fans are what makes a football club special.

“So to be now staying in Sheffield, and managing this club with its incredible supporters makes me very happy. This club has a fantastic history, one of the giants of English football and it is now my job to help get us back to the position we should be in.”

He added: “Is this going to be easy? No! We are maybe in ‘rough waters’ at the moment but as a proud Dane I can tell you that like our Viking ancestors, stormy seas don’t bother us too much. You have to get used to it, to weather the storm to get to calmer waters.

“To the fans, I ask that we stick together. At times we may need to be a little patient as we strive to grow. We all care deeply and will do all we can to bring the great times back to Hillsborough.

“I only ask that you get behind your team. I look forward to seeing you all for the new season.”

Sheffield Wednesday are set to begin their Championship season with an away fixture at Leicester City on Sunday, 10 August.
