The next summer Youth Olympics billed in Dakar, Senegal, has been rescheduled to take place in October 2026.
The games were originally meant to take place from October 22 to November 9, 2022, however, due to the economic complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Senegalese government and the International Olympic Committee decided to move it to 2026.
It will now take place from October 31 until November 13.
The IOC explained in a statement: “The period was proposed, factoring in school and university times to best suit the athletes’ school curriculum, meteorological conditions and other international sports events and celebrations.”
The Youth Olympics in Dakar will be the fourth edition of the competition which began in 2010. It will be the first time ever an African country will host an Olympics event.
The Youth Olympics began in 2010 with Singapore as the maiden hosts. It was followed by Nanjing, China and Buenos Aires, Argentina hosting the next editions in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
