Raphael Varane: French defender to depart Man Utd at end of season

Former France international Raphael Varane has announced that he will depart Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The World Cup winner, who joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid in August 2021, has made 93 appearances for the Premier League giants in three seasons.

The 31-year-old revealed the news of his imminent departure on his official social media platforms on Tuesday.

“To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wearing that shirt,” Varane stated.

The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane; the atmosphere was amazing. I fell in love with the club, and with the fans.

“You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents. For my kids, its home here; it’s going to be a special place for me for life.

“Despite the fact we have had a difficult season, I am very positive for the future. The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy.

“I will see you at Old Trafford to say goodbye in the last home game this season. And it’s going to be a very emotional day for me, for sure.”

Varane formed a strong partnership with Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez, helping Man Utd finish with the best defence in the Premier League last campaign.

He helped Erik Ten Hag’s men to Carabao Cup success in 2023 after they beat Newcastle United in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Varane has played 30 matches for the Red Devils this season but he has been out injured since a 4-3 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Cheslea in April and it remains to see if he would still play this season in United’s remaining three matches.

United play Newcastle United at home on Wednesday before their final league game of the campaign away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Ten Hag’s men will then face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, May 25.
