Randy Waldrum resigns as Super Falcons coach after four years in charge

Randy Waldrum has announced his resignation as the head coach of the Super Falcons after four years in charge, Afrosport reports.

The American tactician assumed his role in 2020 and guided them to fourth place at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco before leading them to a solid round of 16 finish at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they were unbeaten in regular time.

Waldrum cited health problems of his wife as the reason for his resignation in a statement which read:

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that.

“After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons.

“This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”

Waldrum became Super Falcons head coach at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and had something of a bumpy ride as he was dismissed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in October 2023 only to be reinstated back a month later, with  Justin Madugu serving as caretaker coach.
