Ramadan: Premier League players allowed to break fast during games

Players across leagues in England will be permitted to break their fast in evening matches during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Match officials have been directed to give room for a natural pause in play and to let players break their fast by taking liquids, energy gels or supplements.

They are also obliged to identify players who may need to break their fast during the games, and where possible reach a mutual agreement on time for this to happen.

African stars like Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah, Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy & Kalidou Koulibaly as well as Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez and other Muslim players will need to break their fast by sunset during the month of Ramadan which starts on March 22 to April 21.

The first game which was paused to observe the break of fast in the Premier League was between Leicester City and Crystal Palace in 2021.

Both clubs reached an agreement with referee Graham Scott that the game should be paused to allow French defender Wesley Fofana and Senegalese midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate to break their fast.

In a show of appreciation after the game, Fofana took to social media to thank the Premier League, Crystal Palace and their goalkeeper who opted to halt play, for allowing him to break his fast.
