Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint Germain could find themselves a new stadium as they are reportedly linked with a potential move across the French capital into the Stade de France as their concerted efforts to acquire the Parc des Princes prove futile.
French Sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said the sale of the Stade de France is being considered, alongside granting a new operating concession after the current one expires in 2025.
The 81,000-seater stadium has been the national stadium of France since 1995 and has hosted major finals of the FIFA World Cup, European Championship and the UEFA Champions League twice, while still serving as the home stadium for the French national team.
PSG have played their home games at the Parc des Princes since 1974 but face a potential exit as they are currently deadlocked in negotiations. The club’s president, Naseer Al-Khelafi confirmed last November that their bid was rejected as it was deemed short of the asking price.
“The mayor is forcing PSG to leave its home,” a team spokesperson stated in January. “PSG is now forced to find alternative options to relocate the club.”
The stadium — the sixth-largest in Europe — is valued between $426.9 million and $640.4 million.
The Qatari-owned club now prioritizes the acquisition of the club before they move to splash the cash on any further renovation or expansion of the venue.
