World record holder Tobi Amusan has kicked off the new year impressively by achieving a top-three ranking on the World Athletics list of the best athletes for the 2025 season, Afrosport reports.
The women’s 100m hrdles star, along with two other Nigerian athletes – Ezekiel Nathaniel and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi – are recognised among the world’s elite, securing places in the top 100.
Their remarkable performances in hurdles and shot put have ensured Nigeria remains a significant presence on the global athletics scene.
Amusan, who won a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, concluded the year as the third-best in her event worldwide. With a total of 1,430 ranking points, she was only outperformed by gold medallist Ditaji Kambundji from Switzerland and American Grace Stark.
The 28-year-old is the only Nigerian woman to be ranked in the top five of her discipline and holds the 28th position in the overall women’s rankings for 2025.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel had an exceptional breakout season, finishing the year as the fifth-ranked 400m hurdler in the world and 15th in the men’s overall standings. The 22-year-old made a historic debut in the Diamond League, reaching the final and achieving a third-place finish.
Shot putter Enekwechi, a multiple African champion, also secured a place in the men’s top 100. After finishing fifth in Tokyo, he wrapped up the year ranked 100th overall and seventh in his event.
