PSG beat Angers to seal Ligue 1 title with six games to spare

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) clinched a fourth straight Ligue 1 title following a 1-0 home win over Angers at the Parc des Princes on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The Paris-based club, unbeaten in the French top-flight this season, needed a 55th-minute strike from 19-year-old forward Desire Doue to seal a record-extending 13th league title victory with six games left to play.

Portuguese forward Goncalo Ramos missed the chance to give the host the lead in the first half after failing to find the back of the net with a close-range header.

His compatriot, Vitinha, thought he had opened the scoring shortly afterwards, but his effort, which was aiming for the top left corner, was clawed away by Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Doue, however, broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half against his hometown club, with the France international firing home a volley from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cross.

PSG held on for victory, sealing their 11th league title in 13 seasons, with Luis Enrique’s men on course for a quadruple this season. They, meanwhile, could become the seventh side from Europe’s top five leagues to go an entire league season unbeaten if they avoid defeat in their remaining six games.

With 28 matches played in the league, Enrique’s men, sit 24 points ahead of second-placed Monaco and could also break Nantes’ 32-game unbeaten record from the 1994-95 season.

“Nobody has done that in France before, so that’s something that we want to achieve,” the Spanish coach said. “That would help us in the Champions League and the Coupe de France.

“Celebrating a title in early April shows that we’ve reached a very high level this season. We’ve achieved this target, but we have more games to play.”

Captain Marquinhos also echoed his manager’s thoughts and charged his teammates to finish the season strong.

“It’s crazy, I’m very happy,” Marquinhos told beIN Sports. “The titles will remain in history. We have the ambition to win everything. When we don’t win the French championship, it hurts. That has happened to me twice.

“The team deserves to win. It’s in our DNA to give everything on the field, to have an aggressive philosophy, to sweat for the jersey in every match, no matter the opponent. It’s nice to see the supporters happy.”

PSG host Aston Villa on Wednesday, 9 April, in a huge Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash and also have a Coupe de France final against Reims slated for 24 May.
