Premier League: Wolves confirm Vitor Pereira as new head coach

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed the appointment of former Porto boss Vitor Pereira as their new coach, Afrosport reports.

Pereira moves to the Molineux from Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, having signed an 18-month contract with Wolves, who reportedly coughed up £825,000 in compensation.

The 56-year-old replaces Gary O’Neil, who was relieved of his duties on Sunday following Wolves’ 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi told the club media: “Vitor is a highly respected and experienced coach who has achieved success across different leagues and will bring a new approach for the test ahead.

“This is a challenging moment for the club, and we want to thank Vitor for taking on this responsibility.

“We have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track, alongside the players and staff, and the entire club will be united in supporting him to achieve success.”

News broke out on Tuesday that Wolves had agreed to a deal to sign the Portuguese, who led Porto to Primeira Liga triumph in 2012 and 2013 and won the Greek Super League with Olympiakos in 2015.

Pereira joined Al-Shabab in February and departs with the club sixth in the Saudi top flight.

Wolves currently sit 19th in the Premier League with 11 defeats in 16 league games this season, having won just two matches—against Southampton and Fulham.

Vitor Pereira reportedly took charge of team training for the first time on Thursday and will be looking for a favourable result in his maiden game as a Premier League manager when they visit the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City on Sunday.
