Premier League: Salah shines in Liverpool win; Chelsea held despite Jackson’s goal

Liverpool put the proverbial icing on the cake on a very eventful Sunday in the Premier League as the Reds, led by Mohamed Salah’s goal and two assists, ensured they beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old struck in the 56th minute to seal the victory for the Merseyside club, having earlier provided both of Luis Diaz’s goals in the 25th and 42nd minutes.

With boos ringing across Old Trafford for the home team, Arne Slot’s men heaped more misery on Erik ten Hag and his United side following last weekend’s disappointing 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Liverpool currently sit in second position in the league standings, as United dropped into it after back-to-back losses from their opening three Premier League matches.

At Stamford Bridge, Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson scored in back-to-back games for Chelsea as the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Jackson opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 25th minute with a fine finish from a Cole Palmer assist to register his second goal in successive games after scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

However, England international Eberechi Eze equalised for Palace in the 53rd minute to ensure the Eagles registered their first point of the season, while Chelsea suffered a setback after their emphatic win at Molineux.

Elsewhere at St James’ Park, Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to continue their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season as Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first league appearance since October after he served a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations.

The Magpies took the lead in the 37th minute after Harvey Barnes slotted into the bottom corner of the visitors net from a Lloyd Kelly assist. Although an own goal from Dan Burn in the 56th minute meant the visitors drew level, Sweden international Alexander Isak grabbed the winner for Newcastle in the 78th minute to open his account for the season.

Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle made it two wins and a draw in three games.
