Premier League: Morocco’s Aguerd scores and sees red in epic West Ham victory

Nayef Aguerd scored for West Ham United but was also sent off in their epic 3-1 Premier League win over London rivals Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers could only draw at Bournemouth in their league opener last weekend and were going to face against a tough challenge against a Blues side that drew with Liverpool last time out and strengthened their squad with the addition of big money signings Moses Caicedo and Romeo Lavia from Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton respectively.

West Ham however took the lead in the seventh minute of play when Aguerd rose highest to head home James Ward-Prowse’s corner kick. Chelsea responded back in the 28th minute via Carney Chukwuemeka who scored the first senior goal of his career. They had the opportunity to make it 2-1 two minutes to half time break but Enzo Fernandez had his penalty saved by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

David Moyes’ side went ahead 2-1 thanks to Michail Antonio’s composed finish off Ward-Prowse’s pass in the 53rd minute. They were however reduced to 10 men after Aguerd received a second yellow card for rash challenge on Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson.

West Ham held firm despite their numerical disadvantage and still added one more in additional time thanks to Manchester City-linked Lucas Paqueta’s cool-converted penalty which was conceded by British record signing Caicedo.

The victory is West Ham’s first victory over Chelsea since December 2021 while Mauricio Pochettino searches for his first win as Blues boss after spending heavily in the ongoing summer transfer window.
