Premier League: Kudus stars with brace in West Ham win over Wolves

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored a brace for West Ham United in their comfortable 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The former Ajax man scored twice in the first half to take his Premier League tally to five goals as the Hammers bounced back from their uncharacteristic 5-0 loss to Fulham last weekend.

The 23-year-old broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, converting a well-organised counterattack from the home side.

After West Ham dealt with a Wolves corner, Lucas Paqueta picked up the ball in the middle of the field before playing in Kudus, who was in a large area of space on the right. The Black Stars midfielder cut into the middle before unleashing a low strike into the bottom corner, beating Dan Bentley in goal for the Wolves.

Shortly after Lukasz Fabianski made a top save to deny Wolves’ Matheus Cunha, Kudus doubled his side’s lead ten minutes after his opener. The West Ham No. 14 was played in by Paqueta once more before driving into space and playing his low strike across goal to put his side in a comfortable lead heading into halftime.

The in-form Jarrod Bowen almost made it three for the Hammers on the 45th minute mark, but his low effort from the edge of the box crashed against the inside of the post and behind for a goal-kick.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Spanish winger Pablo Sarabia thought he had halved the deficit for Wolves, but his attempt was ruled offside after a VAR review.

Bowen eventually got on the scoresheet in the 74th minute, putting the game to bed with his tenth league goal of the season. The Englishman played a quick one-two with Paqueta, who became just the second Brazilian to get three assists in a Premier League game, before finding the bottom corner with a strike across the goal.

The win ensured that West Ham, who won just four of their opening 11 Premier League games this season, have now won four of their last six, drawing once and losing once.

David Moyes’ side climbs into eighth in the league standings with 27 points after claiming their eighth victory of the season, and they will welcome Manchester United next to the London Stadium on Saturday for a battle between seventh and eighth in the league.
