Premier League: Bryan Mbeumo’s early strike earns Brentford draw against West Ham

Cameroonian forward Bryan Mbeumo scored inside the first minute at the Gtech Community Stadium to help Brentford secure a 1-1 draw against West Ham United in matchday six action in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Cameroon international, who has been in incredible form this season, scoring four goals in five league games prior to today, made it five goals in six games with about 38 seconds on the clock against the Hammers, who were desperately in need of a good result having been winless in their last four matches.

A header by the Bees’ summer signing Fabio Carvalho from an amazing cross by Kevin Schade, sent the ball into the path of Mbeumo, and the 25-year-old made no mistake as he powered an acrobatic volley past goalkeeper Alphonso Areola and into the top corner, a goal that was reminiscent of his opener at Tottenham a week ago.

Mbeumo’s strike made history for Brentford as they became the first team in Premier League history to score in the first minute in three consecutive games, having also achieved the same feat a fortnight ago when the injured Yoane Wissa scored their opener in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The ex-Troyes forward overtook former strike partner Ivan Toney (47G/A), who departed for Saudi Arabia this summer, as the Brentford player with the most goals contribution in the Premier League, with 48G/A having scored 27 goals and provided 21 assists.

West Ham were switched on after this and continued knocking for a equaliser, but the closest they came in the first half was a Mohammed Kudus effort, which went straight to the hands of Brentford goalie Mark Flekken.

The second half began with the Hammers in the driving seat and they eventually reaped the reward of their resurred approach as Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek drew the East Londoners level in the 54th minute. After some nice interchange between Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Soucek, the ball found its way into the path of the latter, who turned it home from close range for their equaliser.

Both teams kept trying for the winner but they failed to muster up a clear chance to get the winning goal and secure all available points as they points were shared in the

For the Bees, the result meant they were now winless in three straight matches in the Premier League since their home win over Southampton last month, while Julien Lopetegui’s West Ham continue to struggle as they are now winless in four league games and have only recorded victory once this season.

Brentford, who got their first draw this season, remain 12th in the standings with seven points after six matches played, while the Hammers are 14th with five points.
