Portugal’s Pepe breaks Roger Milla’s World Cup record

Portugal captain Pepe has become the oldest player to score a goal in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.

Pepe scored Portugal’s second goal in their 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland on Tuesday night at the age of 39 years and 283 days.

Cameroon legend Roger Milla previously held the record after his extra-time brace in a round of 16 fixture between Cameroon and Colombia at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Milla scored his goals at the age of 38. Four years later, he etched his name in the history books to become the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup game at the age of 42 years and 39 days in USA 1994.

Prior to Cameroon’s opening match against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Milla who is now 70 years old was honoured by FIFA with a plaque of recognition at the Al Janoub Stadium.

Pepe and Portugal will continue their quest for World Cup glory with a quarter-final clash against Morocco at the Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday.
