Premier League referee under investigation for elbowing Liverpool’s Robertson

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced that assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis will not be involved in any games pending the completion of the ongoing investigation against him.

The official is being investigated for an apparent elbow on Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson just after half-time of their 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.

The refereeing controlling body of the Premier League released a statement on Monday, reiterating that they are aware of the incident and further actions will be taking.

The statement reads: “PGMOL is aware of an incident involving assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson at half-time during the Liverpool v Arsenal fixture at Anfield. We will review the matter in full once the game has concluded.”

Robertson approached Hatzidakis as both teams left the pitch for the half-time break, grabbing the official’s arm in what seemed like a confrontation.

However, in many videos making the rounds on social media, the assistant referee appeared to have raised his elbows, catching Robertson in the face.

The Scottish full-back was enraged by the gesture before being led away by his Liverpool teammates. Robertson ended up receiving a yellow card from referee Paul Tierney for the confrontation, but it is Hatzidakis’ action that will come under further scrutiny.
