Paul Mitchell to leave role as Newcastle sporting director

Paul Mitchell will leave his role as Newcastle United sporting director by mutual consent at the end of next month, Afrosport reports.

His departure comes less than a year after he joined the Magpies last July to replace Dan Ashworth, who left for Manchester United but was dismissed after just five months.

Mitchell joined Newcastle at a time when they had to sell players such as Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, while the likes of Lewis Hall and William Osula were signed.

The club in a statement said: “Newcastle United can announce that Sporting Director, Paul Mitchell, will leave the club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025.

“Paul leaves with the club’s best wishes, and the Board would like to express its sincere thanks to him for his professionalism and diligent service.”

Mitchell, in his speech, said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year.

“I’m leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales – someone who I have worked so closely with in my career – moving on soon.

“The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building.”

Newcastle United ended the season by defeating Liverpool to win the EFL Cup, their first domestic cup title in 70 years.

They also finished fifth in the Premier League, qualifying for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.
