Paris 2024 Paralympics: Nigeria’s Oluwafemiayo wins gold, breaks para-powerlifting world record

Nigerian powerlifter, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, won a gold medal in the women’s over 86kg Para Powerlifting competition at the ongoing Paris 2024 Paralympics, Afrosport reports.

She became the first para-athlete in history to lift the 166kg weight, taking Nigeria’s overall tally in Paris to seven medals

Oluwafemiayo, who is Team Nigeria’s captain, lifted 167kg, Xuamei Deng of China finished second after lifting 155kg, while Egyptian Nadia Ali came third with 145kg.

In 2022, Oluwafemiayo won the gold medal in her event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia.

She also won gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the heavyweight event.

In another related development, Bose Omolayo lifted an impressive 145kg to secure the silver medal for Nigeria in the Women’s 79kg para powerlifting category.

Flora Ugwunwa won a silver medal in the Women’s Javelin F54 category with a throw of 19.26 meters,

Meanwhile, Isau Ogunkunle became the first Nigerian athlete to win an individual medal in para table tennis since the Sydney 2000 Games after he clinched a bronze medal in the men’s Singles Class 4 Para Table Tennis event.
