Egypt reached the men’s football semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics following their 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Paraguay after a 1-1 draw in Marseille on Friday evening.
The Pharaohs finished top of their group ahead of 2020 silver medallists Spain, Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan.
Things were however different against the Paraguayans with little separating bort sides until the 71st minute when Diego Gomez put the South Americans ahead.
It looked like Egypt were heading for a quarter-final exit in regular time but Ibrahim Adel salvaged the situation with his equaliser in the 88th minute.
The scores remained unchanged in extra time and off to penalties it went where Egypt goalkeeper Hamza Alaa made the difference when he saved Marcelo Perez’s spot kick.
The Pharaohs converted all theirs with Adel netting the winning penalty.
