Osimhen equals Maradona’s record with hat-trick in Napoli win

Nigeria star Victor Osimhen became the third Napoli player to score at least 10 goals in four consecutive Series A seasons.

Osimhen scored a hat-trick on Wednesday as Napoli cruised to a comfortable 6-1 away at Sassuolo.

The Super Eagles star now joins Diego Maradona (1984-1988) and Attila Sallustro (1929-1933) in the hallowed ranks after his latest heroics.

His contribution of three goals and an assist also made Sassuolo his best opponent having scored eight goals in his last six games against the team – two more than any other opponent in the Big-5 European leagues.

Osimhen has now scored 11 goals in 15 league appearances this season and five goals in all competitions since his return from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 25-year-old won the Serie A’s golden boot last campaign with 25 goals but he is 12 goals behind leading top scorer Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan.

Napoli are ninth in the Serie A table with eight points behind the Serie A top-four for next season’s UEFA Champions League qualification.

However, Osimhen will be hoping to continue his fine form as Francesco Calzona’s team host second-placed Juventus at the Studio Diego Armando Maradona on Sunday, March 3.
