Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel is set for a disciplinary hearing after being summoned by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for his part in last month’s violent scenes in a league match between Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor.
The 26-year-old, along with clubmate Michy Batshuayi, played the role of a hero, fending off Trabzonspor supporters in a violent outbreak that ensued at the end of the game.
A late goal from Batshuayi gave Fenerbahce a 3-2 win at Papara Park in Trabzon on March 17, and the visitors jubilation after the game apparently didn’t sit right with the home fans.
Osayi-Samuel, along with two other players and two club officials, will appear before a disciplinary committee for their part in the bust-up in which the Nigerian was seen punching a fan before being dragged off by security.
The full back, who represented the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, will be joined by Jayden Oosterwolde, with the Dutch defender facing possible sanctions for kicking the same fan.
However, the summons are not limited to Fenerbahce players and staff only, as an assistant coach of Trabzonspor will also appear before the disciplinary committee.
Additionally, thirteen Trabzonspor supporters were arrested, with five currently in pre-trial detention.
Following the shameful incident at the end of the match, FIFA president Gianni Infantino extended his condemnation for such acts, which have become a part of Turkish football in recent times, as he termed them “absolutely unacceptable.”
