Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he remains confident in Andre Onana despite his mistakes in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League draw at Lyon, Afrosport reports.
The Cameroon international came under the spotlight when he claimed that the Red Devils were better than the French team to which former United midfielder Nemanja Matic described him as one of the West goalkeepers in the club’s history.
Onana however failed to cover himself in glory as he was found culpable for Lyon’s two goals, regardless, Amorim did not find any fault in the former Ajax player.
“It can happen. If you play football and you play a lot of games, you can make mistakes,” the Portuguese tactician said.
“If you look at the season, I make more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months. So that can happen. The good thing is that we have one more game to change everything. So that should be our focus.”
Wheen asked if he had spoken to Onana about the incident, Amorim responded: “I didn’t see him, to be honest with you. I used these minutes to try to calm down, to come here, to say the right things. But it’s normal.
“I think I felt really quiet in the dressing room and that is a good thing. We draw away in Europe, that is always hard, but the team is suffering. But we need to change that and we have the opportunity to change. So let’s focus on that.”
