NPFL suspends Adeyinka over alleged betting scandal

Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka has been suspended from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) amid allegations of involvement in betting, Afrosport reports.

In a letter dated Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer (COO) Davidson Owumi, the league announced that Adeyinka’s registration has been put on hold pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

The suspension follows accusations from his current club, Plateau United FC, claiming the goalkeeper was involved in betting activities during the 2024-2025 NPFL season.

According to the NPFL, the suspicion intensified when Adeyinka allegedly declined to sign a contract with a prospective new club because it included a clause allowing for immediate termination in the event of a betting-related offence.

League officials said his refusal raised further questions, and lent credibility to the allegations against him.

Under Article 15.5, Section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules, players are strictly prohibited from betting on football matches, particularly games in which they are directly involved.

Violations carry severe sanctions under Section C, ranging from suspension to deregistration and further disciplinary action. The league reiterated that such behavior compromises the integrity of the sport and undermines public trust in Nigerian football.

The suspension puts a halt to his anticipated move to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), who were reportedly close to finalising a  deal with the goalkeeper ahead of the 2025-2026 NPFL season, which is scheduled to kick off on August 22.
