Wirtz beats Olise to win Germany’s Player of the Year award

Florian Wirtz has been named Germany’s player of the year, winning the award ahead of Bayern Munich sensation Michael Olise, Afrosport reports.

Wirtz won the award as a Bayer Leverkusen player before completing his blockbuster £116 million summer move to Liverpool.

The 22-year-old secured 191 votes from members of the Association of German Sports Journalists, and was way clear of second-placed Olise who helped Bayern to a record-extending 34th Bundesliga title.

Despite scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists in 55 competitive games, the 23-year-old Frenchman of Nigerian and Algerian heritage got only 81 votes.

Wirtz meanwhile scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists as Leverkusen finished second, 13 points behind Bayern.

The German attacking midfielder played a key role in Leverkusen’s historic 2023-24 campaign, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists in 49 competitive games, as they won their first-ever Bundesliga title and did so unbeaten.

It ultimately saw Wirtz crowned Bundesliga player of the season. He left the pharmaceutical-backed club this summer with 57 goals, 65 assists and 197 appearances to his name.

Nick Woltemade of Stuttgart finished in third place with 71 votes, ahead of Thomas Muller (70 votes) who brought his 25-year association with Bayern to an end to join MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.

Meanwhile, German duo Giulia Gwinn and Ann-Katrin Berger shared the women’s player of the year award having gotten 608 votes.

Freiburg boss Julian Schuster won the coach of the year after leading the team to a fifth place in the Bundesliga and qualification for the upcoming Europa League.

He finished ahead of Elversberg boss Horst Steffen and Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
