NPFL: Gombe Utd relegated as Enyimba put pressure on Rangers
It was a tale of mixed reactions in matchday 34 of the Nigeria Premier Football League with the demotion of Gombe United to the second division after losing 2-0 at home to Sunshine Stars.
The crucial away result was enough for Sunshine Stars to move out of the drop zone after goals from Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor sealed their maximum points at the Isa Pantami Stadium.
Earlier on Saturday, Remo Stars defeated Kano Pillars 2-1 in Ikenne, and Doma United got the better of Lobi Stars with a 1-0 win while Katsina United surrendered to a 2-0 loss against Bendel Insurance.
In Lagos on Sunday, Rangers International kept their title hopes alive after holding their host Sporting Lagos to a goalless draw.
In Aba, Chijioke Mbaoma and second-half substitute, Elijah Akanni scored a brace each as Enyimba ran riot to a 4-1 win over Rivers United to remain in contention for their 10th league title.
The quest for the league’s top scorer award is now a two-horse race with Mbaoma level on 14 goals with Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi.
The five-goal thriller between Bayelsa United Plateau United ended in favour of the hosts at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa while Niger Tornadoes came from behind to get a point against Kwara United in an encounter that ended 1-1.
Matchday 34 will end on Monday in Uyo when Akwa United welcome Heartland FC to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
