Nigerian tennis table player and former West African champion Taiwo Mati has joined French Pro B side Le Havre in his quest to reclaim his place in the national team, Afrosport reports.
After two seasons in Portugal, Mati, who last represented Nigeria at the 2023 African Games in Ghana, is hoping that his move to France will enhance his chances of securing a call-up to the national team as well as gaining significant improvement in his game.
“I decided to move to France to step up my game and play in a more competitive league. My target is to improve and play as many matches as possible. The French leagues, both Pro A and B, are more competitive than the Portuguese league,” he said.
Mati, who is also eyeing a regular spot on the Le Havre team in the highly-competitive French league, plans to participate in more World Table Tennis (WTT) events to earn ranking points.
“I intend to go to more WTT events and earn more ranking points. By doing so, I’m sure I’ll be back in the national team,” he added.
Mati has become an integral member of the Le Havre team since he joined, helping them record a 3-2 win at Nice in their league opener as they kicked off their journey to securing promotion to Pro A.
“I will also ensure I train regularly with top players in France to improve my game. I am so excited that I am getting closer to my dream of playing in the best league in the world,” the Nigerian stated.
The French League Pro B is known for its fast-paced and thrilling matches, showcasing the immense talent and skill of professional table tennis players from across the country.
