Nigeria’s Murjanatu Musa makes Phoenix Mercury roster for 2025 WNBA season

Nigeria’s Murjanatu Musa will suit up for the Phoenix Mercury in the 2025 Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) season after being named in the team’s final roster, Afrosport reports.

The Mercury signed Musa to a training camp contract in March after impressing at French club Tarbes Gespe Bigorre, averaging 14.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.6 steals through 17 games.

The 25-year-old, a two-time Olympian and two-time FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champion, was integral to Nigeria’s D’Tigress success at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they secured a historic quarter-final finish.

According to Phoenix, Musa’s contract has been partially suspended until she reports to the team, as she is currently playing overseas in France.

The Nigerian, however, is not the only African named to the Mercury’s final roster for the 2025 WNBA season, as she is joined by Cameroonian Monique Akoa Makani, who also joined the franchise from France.

Phoenix’s roster, which comprises 11 new players, will be led by the core trio of Kahleah Copper, All-WNBA forward Alyssa Thomas, and former No. 2 overall pick Satou Sabally.

They will be supported by veterans Sami Whitcomb and Kalani Brown as well as the returning Natasha Mack and new faces Monique Akoa Makani, Lexi Held, Alexis Prince, Sevgi Uzun, and Kathryn Westbeld.

The Mercury will begin their 2025 WNBA campaign against the Seattle Storm, with tip-off set for Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
