Nigeria’s Dele & Daniel Aiyenugba: Recalling fathers & sons who played in same football game

It was a family affair in a pre-season friendly game in Nigeria as former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba competed against his son, Daniel in a fixture between Kwara United and Beyond Limits Football Academy in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Dele Aiyenugba was in goal for Kwara United while his protege wore the no. 1 shirt for Beyond Limits FA, the youth team of NPFL side Remo Stars.

The Aiyenugba’s duo conceded two goals each within 90 minutes as Tuesday’s encounter ended 2-2, and they both saved a penalty each in the shoot-out as Beyond Limits FA came out victorious with a 4-3 win.

It was indeed an unusual scene in football, Afrosport recalls scenarios where fathers and sons have played together at the same time in competitive football games.

Rivaldo and his son, Rivaldinho in 2014: The Brazil legend returned to his boyhood club Mogi Mirim in 2013 where he paired with his son in competitive games before retirement in March 2014.

He returned from retirement in June 2015 and there was a game against Macae where Rivaldo and his 20-year-old son scored a goal each.

 

Alexei Eremenko Sr. and sons, Alexei Jr. and Roman in 2013: Former Russia star Eremenko Sr. played with his first son at Finnish club HJK Helsinki for two seasons, where they both lifted the Finnish top-flight titles and the Finnish Cup.

After leaving Helsinki, Eremenko Sr. joined his second son, Roman at FF Jaro.

Roman curently plays for FC Honka and he was named Finnish FA Player of the Year in 2011 and 2014.

 

Arnor Gudjohnsen and son, Eidur: Towards the end of Arnor’s international career in Iceland, his son Eidur replaced him as a substitute in an international friendly match against Estonia in 1996.

 

Henrik Larsson and his son, Jordan: While Henrik Larsson was trying to wind up his career in Swedish fourth-tier team, Hogaborgs BK where he played alongside his then 15-year-old son Jordan. The son currently plays for FC Copenhagen.
