Nigerians Abroad: Iwobi, Onuachu and others make their mark in Europe

It was another action-packed weekend for Nigerian stars in Europe, with several Super Eagles players making headlines for their respective clubs, Afrosport reports.

Alex Iwobi, Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi and Gift Orban all found the back of the net on Saturday, underlining their importance for both club and country ahead of next month’s international break.

Alex Iwobi (Fulham)

Iwobi inspired Fulham to a thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Brentford at Craven Cottage in the Premier League.

Mikkel Damsgaard gave the Bees the lead in the 20th minute with a precise strike into the bottom corner. But Iwobi levelled matters 18 minutes later, netting his first goal of the season after capitalising on poor defending to beat Caoimhin Kelleher from close range.

The 29-year-old then turned provider, threading a clever pass through to Harry Wilson, who curled home Fulham’s second. The win was sealed when Ethan Pinnock turned a fizzing Ryan Sessegnon cross into his own net.

Gift Orban (Hellas Verona)

Orban netted his first Serie A goal of the season to earn Hellas Verona a 1-1 draw against Juventus.

Francisco Conceicao opened the scoring for the Bianconeri with a fine solo effort in the 19th minute. But Verona were handed a lifeline when Joao Mario conceded a penalty for handball, and Orban coolly converted despite Michele Di Gregorio getting a hand to it.

In doing so, the 23-year-old became the youngest foreign player to score for Verona against Juventus in Serie A, and the club’s fifth-youngest scorer overall in the Italian top flight.

Paul Onuachu (Trabzonspor)

Onuachu struck in the second half to rescue a 1-1 draw for Trabzonspor against Gaziantep in the Turkish Super Lig.

Kevin Rodrigues had fired the visitors ahead in the 39th minute, but the towering striker levelled matters in the 70th minutes. Latching onto a long ball from goalkeeper Andre Onana, Onuachu outmuscled his marker before calmly rounding the goalkeeper and finishing into an empty net.

The 31-year-old has now scored three league goals this season, with Trabzonspor climbing to fourth place in the standings.

Terem Moffi (Nice)

Moffi marked only his second Ligue 1 start since returning from a long-term ACL injury with a goal, though his strike proved little more than consolation as Nice fell 4-1 to Brest.

The forward found the net in the 30th minute, but Brest ran away with the contest thanks to strikes from Ludovic Ajorque, Romain Del Castillo, Joris Chotard and Remy Labeau Lascary.
